If you are the
victim of sexual harassment, the Women's Coalition of St. Croix is available to help you.
Sexual Harassment
is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical
conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when submission to or rejections
of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably
interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or
offensive work environment.
Steps to take
if you are sexually harassed
Clearly
communicate to the harasser that the attention is unwarranted.
Keep a written
record of what happened.
Talk to other
employees if you suspect they, too, have been harassed.
Report the
harassment to your supervisor, and ask that it be stopped.
If your
company has an internal complaint system, or if you are represented by a union, file a
formal complaint.
Deadline to
file a complaint
Charges/complaints
must be filed within 180 days of the alleged discrimination. If you've missed the
deadline you lose your right to file a charge.
